A New Seasons, A New Struggle (Being a teacher is not easy)
A New
Season, A New Struggle (Being a teacher is not easy)
This is like life. Our life has different seasons and
some of those seasons are better than others. Like the seasons change, so do
our lives from time to time. Like I have to adapt to the cold for my running,
we all have to adapt to the changes we experience to the stuggles we go
through. And because I have yet to adapt to the cold, my recent runs have been
little slower than usual, and tomorrow’s run maybe even slower. But even when I
struggle through those runs, I am moving forward. Just because I move a little
slower doesn’t mean I am not progressing. I’ll still accomplish my goal of
finishing the run. Yet what I’ve learned about struggling in life and in my
runs is tomorrow is always another day for redemption. I can comeback the next
day and have a better run. I can have a better day and I don’t have to let my
previous struggle define who I am or where I am going.
My daily routine as a teacher was not all that remarkable.
I got out of bed at 4:00 a.m. and take a wudhu and prayer, then I was showered,
dressed, and ate breakfast. I was required to be at school by 7:15 a.m., but I
always arrived by 6:30 a.m. or 7.00 a.m., sometimes earlier on days. I made
sure that everything I needed for the day was in place, and then I rehearsed my
day for each class in my mind. “First block students will write in journals
five minutes, then I will teach the general knowledge lesson. Should there be
any time time left in the 90-minute block, students will begin working on task and/or
homework, whichever is the most difficult for them so that I will be available
to answer and help them with whichever assignment they have chosen to work on.
After all, once begun, the job’s half done.[students rarely had more than ten
minutes to begin homework, but I liked having some time for their getting
started]. I also double-checked that I had back-up plans should anything go
awry in class or if any assignment did not take as long as I thought it would.
Students always being on task quells behavior issues.
I would go through each class in this manner. During
my planning block, I made copies for future lessons, if I had not already done
so, called parents, met with the principal and other teachers for various
meetings, and always, ALWAYS went to the restroom. According to my class
schedule I would have lunch at some point. I am quite sure this routine is no
different for any other teacher. However, after school is where my routine may
have differed. If I were not having to attend a sports practice(Badminton), I
went home. I live thirthy minutes from school, and by the end of the day, I
needed a change of scenery. I went home, changed clothes, take a rest, then did
some work or hangout with my best friends. I did anything that did not involve
school. Around 5:00 p.m. or so, I returned to school with a clearer head and
made sure I had everything in place for the next day.
Being a teacher is not easy. But If you love your job - and I believe that you can be a
teacher, never mind a good one, if you don’t love your job - then how busy the
day is contributes to the fun of it. Keeping yourself challenged is fun. Being
able to switch from one thing to another and keep everything in your mind is
hectic, but fun.
There are meetings, briefings, phone calls, emails,
brief chats and discussions, a lot of data and information to review. There are
lessons to teach and plan, books to mark and homework to set. There are a
hundred different things you have to do on any given day, and if you’ve not got
the mental acuity for it, you’ll struggle.
But it’s the best job in the world and when you see
someone get something and understand it forever because you’ve helped them
learn, it’s worth being knackered at the end of every day!
ALWAYS
REMEMBER!!!
Great people can produce some quality works. But a
quality teacher can give birth to thousands of great people. (Orang hebat bisa
melahirhan beberapa karya bermutu. Tapi guru yang bermutu dapat melahirkan
ribuan orang-orang hebat).
